Scoliosis

Physiotherapy for Non-Surgical Scoliosis Patients

Scoliosis refers to lateral curvature of the spine. It may be caused by congenital imbalance of bones, growth asymmetry, trauma, muscle spasm due to pain, or asymmetrical neuromuscular control ~ among other causes.

The majority of cases, however, is of unknown cause (idiopathic) and has an onset during childhood rather than being present at birth. It is often not noticed until pain arises due to misalignment. This can be in childhood, adolescence and into adulthood.

Even though it is not possible to completely straighten structural scoliosis, there may be potential to attain better alignment and decrease pain associated with structural and acquired curvatures.
